Information provided by AMP records that the cornice statue is often called the 'Amicus Group' and was inspired by the Society's original seal. It was created by Victorian sculptor Charles Summers for AMP's Sydney office. The subject of the group [as quoted by Bradshaw's Almanac and general guide for 1864] is "Australia receiving the gifts of Peace and Plenty." The beneficent genius is represented by a female figure, probably Tycho, the Greek goddess of luck or good fortune. The supporting figures, a youth and woman with child, symbolise the vigorous adolescence of Australia. Upon the pedestal is inscribed the Society motto "Amicus certus in re incerta", translated as "A certain friend in uncertain times". The present Sydney sculpture is a new interpretation by Tom Bass in 1962 but statuary groups in the same style as Summers' original piece are still to be found on other existing and former AMP buildings. |
